What should I do if the switchgear door lock suddenly won’t open?
1. When the door is slammed shut—often due to a sudden gust of wind—the latch bolt of the buzzer lock may disengage, or the door may become warped and distorted, or the fixing screw for the latch bolt may loosen and protrude, thereby jamming the door frame and preventing the door from opening.
a. If the speaker is locked, and the communication switchgear cabinet door lock is in this situation, please refer to the article “What to Do if It’s Locked from the Inside.”
b. In the case of an auxiliary lock—typically installed on iron doors or brass-plated doors—the lock bolt or handle latch may become loose, protrude, and jam against the door frame, preventing the door from opening. (Use a flathead screwdriver to gently push the protruding screw back into its proper position through the gap in the door.)
2. When a foreign object is jammed, it is often difficult to turn the handle or key. (First determine whether the door opens inward or outward: for outward-opening doors, pull firmly toward the interior; for inward-opening doors, push firmly outward. When operating the cabinet door lock from the outside, for outward-opening doors, push firmly toward the interior; for inward-opening doors, pull firmly outward. This can reduce the resistance and make it easier to turn the lock.)
3. When you call a locksmith and say the lock is broken and won’t open, do you really believe it? In such cases, it’s worth contacting another locksmith to try. I often encounter situations where, after the lock is finally opened, the homeowner reveals that it was a second-hand lock. It’s surprising how quickly it can be opened! On the other hand, there are instances where a cabinet door lock has been locked for ages and still won’t budge—yet the owner claims it’s “broken” and needs replacing with a new one (even a decent, well-maintained lock can easily last ten years under normal use). Some locksmith shops will cite “it can’t be opened” as an excuse to push for a replacement; sometimes this is due to technical issues, and other times it’s simply because they don’t want to spend too much time on the job. (It’s best to stick with a single, reputable locksmith you can trust.)
